Panniculectomy: Reconstructive Surgery for Excess Abdominal Skin

What is a Panniculectomy?

Panniculectomy is a common reconstructive surgery performed on the midsection or torso. This procedure involves removing excess skin, known as a panniculus, that hangs over the patient's groin area, typically following significant weight loss. Unlike a tummy tuck, a panniculectomy does not include muscle tightening or contouring. Its primary purpose is to address medical issues caused by the excess skin, such as skin breakdown, rashes, and infections.

Medical Necessity and Insurance Coverage

Some insurance companies may cover the cost of a panniculectomy based on several factors:

  • The severity of medical issues associated with the panniculus
  • The grade of the panniculus
  • Specific plan coverage limits

Surgical Procedure

The panniculectomy procedure involves:

  1. Removal of excess skin and subcutaneous fat
  2. Closure of the wound
  3. In some cases, removal (not repositioning) of the umbilicus (belly button) due to severe displacement

Panniculectomy vs. Tummy Tuck

It's important to understand that a panniculectomy is not intended to improve overall body shape. Key differences include:

  • Panniculectomy focuses solely on removing overhanging skin causing health issues
  • No muscle tightening or contouring is performed
  • The procedure is primarily for medical reasons, not cosmetic enhancement

His work is amazing!! I had about a quarter-sized piece of my ear removed due to carcinoma. He worked his magic, and now no one can tell I had the surgery. EDIT I went back to have a scar on my lip, which I have bit a couple times a week in the 65 years since it happened, reduced. Dr. Rishavy worked his magic again, and all is well.
